Music To Your Ears

There’s something magical about seeing and hearing a live orchestra…

The haunting cacophony as the musicians warm up. The silent moment of anticipation as the conductor raises his hands. Rows of bows dancing in unison. And of course, the music. Everyone, classical music lover or not, should enjoy this experience at least once in their lifetime. Well, guess what Surrey? You’re in luck, because the hills are alive… with the sound of the Surrey Youth Orchestra.

They say that music is the language that brings people together. In this case, it’s young people between the ages of twelve and twenty… over one hundred of them, in fact!

The Surrey Symphony Society is an institution that has dedicated the last four decades to developing young musical talent. Their three orchestras – Junior Strings, Intermediate Orchestra, and the Surrey Youth Orchestra give young musicians across the lower mainland the chance to nurture their musical gifts through performing and competing internationally. The Surrey Youth Orchestra, currently under the direction of Joel Stobbe, has been a consistent award winner at the Vancouver and Fraser Valley Kiwanis Music Festivals, most recently receiving the ‘Most Promising Youth Orchestra’ in the under 17 age category. They’ve performed alongside the West Coast Symphony and received offers to perform at MusicFest Canada.
Next, this group of talented musicians are debuting a free orchestral experience called Space and Time, a commissioned work by Surrey’s own Jordan Noble, one of Canada’s finest composers. Space and Time celebrates Surrey’s unique architectural landmarks. Part One takes place in the Surrey City Hall Atrium and is followed by Part Two at the City Centre Library.

This orchestral event may not take place in a concert hall, but it’s guaranteed to be just as magical… if not more so!
