Discover Surrey Like a Local for #Canada150!

If you’re as excited about Canada’s 150th birthday as we are, you’ll know that the city and the businesses within it are throwing a TON of events and celebrations to commemorate. So much so, that we’ve put together 150 things YOU can do right in here Surrey to celebrate in your own way.

We’re dishing on all ways to discover Surrey like a local, and celebrate like a Canadian. Some items are events, some items are ways to get into the #Canada150 spirit, but all of them will be sure to help ring in the True North, Strong and Free’s big day.

Week 1

#1-Monday: Get on the Owl Prowl
Learn all about Surrey’s local owl population on May 16th with a presentation from the O.W.L Orphan Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Get up close with living owls, then take a guided tour to learn about their habitat.

#2-Tuesday: Shop for local product at Mary’s Garden
Pick up in-season produce at Mary’s Garden. This small, family owned business has been serving Surrey since 1966, and is the perfect place to do your weekly produce shopping. They open up for the season on June 5th!

#3-Wednesday: The 40th annual Bed Races are on!
A rodeo favourite is back for the 40th time on May 18th! The Bed Races are the official kick off to the May Long Weekend staple: The Cloverdale Rodeo. Teams quite literally race their beds down the race route for the top prize.

#4-Thursday: Discover Surrey’s heritage at the Royal Victorian Party
Party like it’s 1899 at the Historic Stewart Farmhouse. Celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday with cake, costumes, and crafts.

#5-Friday: Don’t miss out on Midway rides and fireworks at the Cloverdale Rodeo
Some good old’ fashioned fun is on at the Cloverdale Rodeo! Ride the Ferris Wheel, and the Tilt-a-Whirl, and be sure to stick around for the Friday night fireworks!

#6-Saturday: Lots of #KidApprovedBC Fun is on at the Surrey International Children’s Festival
From May 25th to 27th, the Surrey International Children’s Festival takes over the Surrey Arts Centre for three days of stories, performances, and crafts just for kids.

#7-Sunday: Go fishing!
Did you know that the lake at Green Timbers Urban Forest is stocked year-round with rainbow trout? Pick up your fishing license and learn to fish with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC – a hands-on program that also teaches about habitat conservation.

Week 2

#8-Monday: Catch the action at the BMX Cup!
The Action BMX Cup comes to Surrey for the very first time! This national competition kicks off on May 27th and 28th right here in Surrey, as some of the best in the game compete for top prize. The Cup rolls onto host events in Alberta and Ontario, too!

#9-Tuesday: Attend the Alexandra Fest
This weekend marks the 43rd annual Alexandra Fest held at the Alexandra Neighbourhood House. Filled with #KidApprovedBC activities like crafts, bouncy castles, and demonstrations by Science World, this community event is one you won’t want to miss!

#10-Wednesday: Try something new at Cloverdale Coffee Company
Cloverdale’s local coffee spot Cloverdale Coffee Co. has teamed up with Sugar Patisserie just a stone’s throw away to offer Beer Jellies! Made with Persephone Beers, these adults-only sweets are something truly unique!

#11-Thursday: Visit the Surrey Nature Centre
Located in the Green Timbers Urban Forest is the Surrey Nature Centre: a great place for pro-d days, warm summer days, or a new adventure! The interactive indoor space is filled with a TON of useful information, and you can even borrow a backpack full of activities to kick-start your adventures outside.

#12-Friday: Shop at Guildford Town Centre
A little retail therapy to kick-start your weekend is ALWAYS a good idea! Be sure to check out Guildford Town Centre‘s flagship shop Hudson’s Bay, and discover their collection of Canada 150 gear!

#13-Saturday: Pick up a Central City Red Racer Across the Nation Collaboration
Did you know that Central City Brewers are SUPER patriotic? Not only do they do a ton for the Surrey community, they have now collaborated with 12 breweries across the nation to bring us a super-Canadian 12 pack of beer. 12 beers, 12 collaborations with craft breweries from 12 Canadian provinces and territories.

#14-Sunday: Check out the Historic Stewart Farm’s Canada Is Exhibit
The Historic Stewart Farm is putting on a pretty cool exhibit for #Canada150! They’re gathering personal artefacts like hockey sticks, photos, and memorabilia to help share the unique and diverse Canadian stories of Surrey residents.

Week 3

#15-Monday: Discover Darts Hill Garden
Darts Hill Garden has for the most part remained a local’s secret, but we’re here to spill the beans on this beautiful garden. Dating all the way back to 1943, Darts Hill Garden is open on Saturdays and Sundays in June and September, in addition to select dates in July. Recently expanded to 22.5 acres, explore this true plantsman’s garden on a sunny spring day.

#16-Tuesday: Get colourful
The most colourful 5k race returns to Surrey on June 3rd. Gather up your friends and head to the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre Park for Colour Me Rad for a fun race, t-shirts, sunglasses, and a whole lot of colour!

#17-Wednesday: Have some fun in the sun
Did you know that Surrey has over 10 splash and waterparks? Beat the heat and have some #KidApprovedBC fun while you’re at it. The newly renovated Unwin Park is the ultimate destination for those sticky summer days. If swimming is more your style, Unwin Park also features an outdoor public pool.

#18-Thursday: Hit up patio season
Kick off patio season at Edith + Arthur! Head over on June 3rd for patio games and a special BBQ menu, all while enjoying a refreshing summer beverage like Lonetree Cider or Hey Y’all Iced Tea to the tunes of a live DJ!

#19-Friday: What We Bring at the Surrey Museum
Ever wonder what life was like in Surrey 150 years ago when Canada officially became a nation? The Surrey Museum hosts their What We Bring exhibit fro May 23rd to July 30th, and showcases what migrants brought with them on their journey over to Surrey.

#20-Saturday: Farm fun at Zaklan Heritage Farm
Zaklan Heritage Farm has been providing Surrey and the surrounding area with fresh, ethically grown, and local produce since 1928. A lot has changed since their start nearly 90 years go, and they just made it THAT much easier to purchase your produce. They’re introducing an online ordering system for weekly produce pick-ups. Genius!

#21-Sunday: Seek spiritual refuge
Held at the Cwenengitel Aboriginal Society on June 9th is The Community Sweat Lodge Ceremony. A place for spiritual refuge and mental and physical healing, as well as a place to reconnect with the forces of Mother Nature, Sweat Lodge Ceremonies are an adaptation of traditional Aboriginal observance where one’s spirit is purified within the sweat lodge, and all sense of race, color and religion is set aside. All are welcome, and pre-registration is required.

Week 4

#22-Monday: S+L Grand Opening
Celebrate the Grand Opening of S+L Kitchen & Bar’s South Surrey branch on June 5th with Top Chef Canada winner Matthew Stowe and MasterChef Canada winner David Jorge! Check out what they call the ‘first modern steakhouse in the area’ in this casual upscale restaurant showcasing the chefs’ Fraser Valley roots.

#23-Tuesday: Find something new at the Antique Show
Looking to add to your collection of gadgets and gizmos of plenty? Well, look no further as the Cloverdale Antique & Collectable Show is back in town! Join us on June 10th for over 150 tables of special wares and historical items perfect for some vintage #Canada150 shopping.

#24-Wednesday: In the market for local food and live music
Dedicated on making, baking, and growing locally, the Surrey Urban Farmers Market is a great place to shop for fresh groceries and meet some of our lovely neighbourhood artisans. What’s more, there’s a live performance every week so come check it out!

#25-Thursday: Widest Selection of the Wines of British Columbia
Did you know there are only 21 BC VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) Wine Stores across the province? And we have 2 of them here in Surrey! Discover over 900 BC varietals and 250 chilled wines at Save-On-Foods, all of which are 100% locally crafted. Visit either the Fleetwood or South Point branch to get a taste of BC’s exclusive wine selection.

#26-Friday: Surrey’s newest neighbourhood park
Join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony for Oak Meadows Park’s Grand Opening on June 10th! Enjoy South Surrey’s unique wetland area and forest grove and take part in the 20th Annual Surrey Environmental Extravaganza.

#27-Saturday: One of Surrey’s oldest fine-dining restaurants
Experience fine-dining cuisine in one of Surrey’s heritage houses at the Old Surrey Restaurant, which has been dubbed a “150 Best Neighbourhood Gem” by OpenTable. Not a bad place for a #Canada150 dinner date.

#28-Sunday: Surrey’s Only Labyrinth
Come take a stroll in our lovely Fleetwood Gardens and put your mind at ease in our 7-circuit labyrinth, the only one here in Surrey! A popular spot for wedding and graduation photos, this garden surely adds to Surrey’s neighbourhood beauty and tranquillity.

Week 5

#29-Monday: Firs Things Firs
Start your week at the new Godwin Farm Biodiversity Preserve where over hundreds of Firs, Redwoods, Sequoias, and various other species stand tall beside the creek flowing into the Serpentine River. What’s more, this unique field is home to many bird life and a fruit tree garden of apples, figs, and blueberries.

#30-Tuesday: Sari, Sweets, and Shops
Can you guess where the largest selection of Indian shopping in BC is based in? It’s right here in Surrey! Check out the Payal Business Centre for some unique jewellery, wonderfully tailored saris, irresistible authentic Indian cuisine, and much more!

#31-Wednesday: Relay for Life
Join Canadians in the fight against cancer during Relay for Life, an all-day festival-like fundraising event on June 17th run by the Canadian Cancer Society. Whether you’re walking on the designated track or checking out the many activities and entertainment onsite, there’s lots to do during this community-driven initiative.

#32-Thursday: BC’s Largest Farm & Garden Centre
Wondering where you can be surrounded by rows and rows of gorgeous plants and flowers? Surrey has just the place for you—in 3 locations! Explore Potters, the biggest garden centre in the province, and enjoy a vast array of greenery that is nothing short of two big green-thumbs up!

#33-Friday: Rail Away!
Hop on board the Speeder and Velocipede for free on June 17th at Surrey’s Heritage Rail and discover how train transportation helped shape the city of Surrey and the Fraser Valley! As a part of Surrey Doors Open, this is a great opportunity to learn about Surrey’s heritage at no cost!

#34-Saturday: Urban Safari Society to the Rescue
Attention all Animal Lovers! There’s so much to learn at Urban Safari Rescue Society, home to over 350 rescued exotic animals from 125 different species, some of which can live for over 100 years!

#35-Sunday: Shopping Northwest Coast style
Swing by Cheryl’s Trading Post for genuine Aboriginal art, accessories, and well-crafted handmade products from across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, as well as Central and South America.

Week 6

#36-Monday: Speaking of cool, how about the Surrey Speakeasy (19+)
Get to see a number of artifacts from the decade of decadence in Surrey’s Museum After Dark event, Surrey Speakeasy on June 22nd. Feel like you’re in the Roaring Twenties while whiskey-tasting and munching on Mediterranean tapas while smoky blues play in the background.

#37-Tuesday: National Aboriginal Day
Join us in celebration of the Summer Solstice on June 21st at Bridgeview Community Centre for National Aboriginal Day hosted by The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association. There’s so much to learn about the culture and contributions of Canada’s First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities!

#38-Wednesday: Pull Up a Chair for Canada!
Celebrate #Canada150 with a delicious 5-course Canadian cuisine while connecting with Surrey’s diverse community at Civic Plaza on June 27th through The Long, Long Table! Sign up while tickets last.

#39-Thursday: Cloverdale Market Days
Back in its 3rd year, don’t miss Cloverdale Market Days on June 24 from 10AM to 4PM to catch some of our local artists in action, get a taste of the appetising food our local restaurants have to offer, and join in on the outdoor entertainment the Market has in store! We’re hosting an Instameet at the market, which is a great way to take some beautiful photos and make some new friends, too!

#40-Friday: TGIF Party!
It’s Friday Night and it’s time to head down to Sawbucks Pub. Lay your moves down on the dance floor and party to the tunes of the live DJ, followed by some late-night karaoke! Party starts at 8:30PM every Friday!

#41-Saturday: Time to Reflect
Explore what it means to be Canadian now and in the future at Surrey Art Gallery’s free exhibition, Reflections on Canada, on from June 23 to August 26. From painting to photography, from sculpture to fabric, artists showcase a range of media to reflect on themes of environment, diversity, inclusion, youth, and reconciliation in celebration of #Canada150.

#42-Sunday: What a grand view at Grandview Shopping Centre!
Upscale fashion, food, home furnishings, and bistros—there’s lots to discover at the unique outdoor Grandview Corners Shopping Centre well-suited to urban lifestyle.

Week 7

#43-Monday: Happy Birthday, Canada!
Canada Day is coming up and Surrey is going to make it big this year for #Canada150! Join our free-admission all-day festival at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre on July 1st and catch world-class musical performances from artists such as Hedley and MAGIC! Don’t miss out on all the amusement rides, ziplines, delicious food, historical reenactments, and fireworks finale!

#44-Tuesday: Sounds Like Summer
What’s that we hear? It’s the Sounds of Summer Music Series jamming out to various genres from around the world! Grab your blankets and picnic baskets to this free #Canada150 celebration at various parks around the city every Wednesday from June 28th to August 30th.

#45-Wednesday: Taste of Asia Buffet
Drop by the lively Elements Casino and pile your plate with a delectable selection of cuisines ranging from salads to seafood to prime ribs! With themed specialty buffets every day of the week, such as their Monday Pasta Buffet and Friday Southern BBQ Buffet, this restaurant will turn the tables on what it means to dine without limits.

#46-Thursday: 10/10 Tennis Centre
Tennis is fun but body sprains aren’t. Luckily, we have the only red clay courts in all of Western Canada at Surrey Tennis Centre! With the floor’s softer surface which reduces injuries by 75%, tennis just got even more exciting. So what are you waiting for? Game on.

#47-Friday: Bring your noisemakers to Dominion Days!
Celebrate #Canada150 at Historic Stewart Farm’s largest event, the new free-admission Dominion Days festival on July 1st and July 2nd. #52-Wednesday: Canada Cup Softball Championship
Join us as national and elite softball teams come together and compete in this year’s Canada Cup International Softball Championship. From July 7th to 17th, athletes will be striving to reach their personal best in this fast-paced tournament of fastpitch, so come cheer them on!

#53-Thursday: Be awestruck at BC Truck Museum

Feel like you’re swimming in the Olympics at the new state-of-the-art Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre! Complete with a waterslide, a full set of dive towers, a lazy river by the leisure pool, hot tubs and saunas, summer is in full gear at this Aquatic Centre.

Week 9

#57-Monday: Go Crazy at Rugged Maniac
Have an insane amount of fun on July 15th at Rugged Maniac where you can ride the mechanical bull, compete in the pie-eating contest, play beach volleyball, and go through heart-pumping obstacles with your friends!

#58-Tuesday: It’s going to be a bright, bright, sunshiny Newton Days!
Newton Days are back to kick off the summer! Open every Saturday from July 8th to August 26th at Newton Grove, complete with the farm’s market, the kid fun zone, henna tattoos, face-painting, Science World demonstrations, and more.

#59-Wednesday: Bee Entertained at Honeybee Festival
You can’t miss the classic family-friendly Honeybee Festival on July 15 to 16, back for more amazing and educational entertainment with live music, face-painting, and some of the wildest extreme stunts you’ll ever see at the bee yard!

#61-Friday: Car Trunk Sales
Spend a summer afternoon finding great bargains on used items and interesting knick-knacks at the Car Trunk Sale on July 15th! What’s more, there will be fun family-friendly activities and road hockey, so come check it out.

#62-Saturday: Field Hockey National Championships
Let out your inner Canadian spirit and cheer at the first ever Field Hockey National Championships Festival involving both male and female youth divisions! Bring those caps and sunglasses, and catch top athletes, coaches, and officials from all over Canada in action from July 17 to 25.

#63-Sunday: Fighting Cancer Cowboy-style (19+)
In its 5th year, the large-scale outdoor country music concert and beer garden event, Gone Country, is here on July 22nd to raise proceeds to fight cancer, so get out those daisy dukes and bring your friends to an exciting night of partying!

Week 10

#64-Monday: Surrey Fusion Festival
One of the best things about Canada is our diverse multiculturalism, which we celebrate with great passion and pride at Surrey Fusion Festival! Join us on this free-entry festival from July 22nd to 23rd and check out over 45 cultural pavilions and six stages featuring over 150 performers. Explore a world of culture, dance, and cuisine at Holland Park, where live music, entertainment, and a ton of games, prizes, and giveaways await!

#65-Tuesday: Downtown Surrey Pin Stop
Casual urban treasure hunters will love the Downtown Surrey Pin Stop where you get to collect limited-edition #Canada150 pins while exploring the bustling heart of Surrey! Check out their website to find out how you can join the hunt starting July 1 to August 31.

#66-Wednesday: Paw Play in the Park
Spend some quality time with your pets at Paw Play in the Park throughout July and August. Play interactive games and learn more dog agility, tricks, and behaviour from animal professionals as pet photographers capture these special moments!

#67-Thursday: Party for Nature
Why not spend an afternoon with everyone in the family while saving the forest from invasive plants! Join the community in caring for Surrey’s one-of-a-kind urban forest at Nature Work Party.

#68-Friday: Cloverdale Sunday Flea Market
You won’t find a better blend of fantastic people, community spirit, a rich municipal history, and fresh produce, plants, and flowers than the Cloverdale Sunday Flea Market! Every Sunday this summer, the Cloverdale Fairgrounds will be bustling with energy and overflowing with a wide variety of wares and goods, from electronics to handmade crafts to personal collectables.

#69-Saturday: Wave Like You Just Don’t Care at Newton Wave Pool
Slide on by the Newton Wave Pool to cool off from the summer sun. Or simmer under the hot tub and steam room— that works here, too. Open to all-ages, it also has a toddler pool and a water fortress with sprays and cannons to enter summer with a blast!

#70-Sunday: Full of Taste and Quality at Full Ramen

#71-Monday: South Surrey Community Festival
Come celebrate with us on July 29th at South Surrey Community Festival where friends and family can meet local artisans and entertainers! There’ll be a Dunk Tank, a Children’s Play Zone, All Wheels Jam, prizes to be won, and more.

#72-Tuesday: Fun in the Sun Picnic
Play a round of mini-golf or race through obstacle courses at Fun in the Sun Picnic on July 27th! This kid-friendly event is perfect for a day under the warm sunshine at Sunnyside Park.

#73-Wednesday: West Village Café
Try the casual upscale West Village Café at the heart of South Surrey and indulge in their savory breakfast treats, sandwiches, salads, and specials. With the welcoming environment and open space, it’s easy to relax while sipping their rich, delectable coffee.

#74-Thursday: Métis Celebration
Canada as we know it wouldn’t have been the same without the major contributions of the Métis community, so we should celebrate! Immerse yourself in Métis culture on July 29th at the Métis Celebration, where you and your family can show off your dancing skills in a jigging performance, visit a real trapper’s tent, sample some bannock bread, watch woodcarving and finger-weaving demonstrations, and take part in lots of other fun activities.

Drop by the family-run green wonder at Art Knapp Plantland. This lovely garden spot and marketplace not only boasts a proud BC heritage, it is also abundant in beautiful flowering plants, ponds, fishes, bird houses and feed, giftware and decor, and so much more!

#76-Saturday: Family Fun at FunWorld Playcentre
Bumper cars, laser tag, arcade games, and a jungle of slides? It’s a kid’s paradise at FunWorld Family Playcentre! Bring the little ones on a weekend trip to a world of play and friendly competition at this fantastic indoor playground.

#77-Sunday: Foam Glow 5K
Working with Children’s Miracle Network to raise awareness about children’s cancer, Foam Glow 5K is coming to Surrey to spread the word on August 5th. Join the race to give back to the community while having a blast at the back-lit dance floor!

Week 12

#78-Monday: Fun that gets you bouncing off the walls
Add a spring to your step and jump in on all the excitement at Sky Zone! Let out all your energy by reaching for the sky on their Freestyle Jump trampoline arena, or leap without limits in their Foam Zone where strong jumps are met with soft landings. You can also challenge your friends to a game of trampoline basketball at Skyslam, or add some power to your throw at Ultimate Dodgeball.

#79-Tuesday: Catching a Pearl Fever
Once you’ve tried it, you won’t help but come down with a case of bubble tea cravings at Pearl Fever! Try their variety of flavours and mixtures made to suit anyone’s taste. Looking to spend some time at the park while being close to the sandy beach? We’ve got just the thing! Come down to Blackie Spit by Crescent Beach, a well-known local hot spot for flying kites and enjoying nature trail walks to take in the splendid ocean views and wildlife.

#81-Thursday: Movies Under the Stars
Every Saturday of August is the family favourite Movies Under the Stars at Holland Park! Whip out those blankets and lawn chairs and have a fun night out with the community while munching on free popcorn and enjoying live performances.

#82-Friday: Cloverdale Country Farm Market
Can you tell how much Surrey loves locally-grown produce? Who wouldn’t when they’re this good! At Cloverdale Country Farm Market, you’ll find what your heart (and stomach) desires in their wide array of all-natural products. Treat yourself to some freshly baked goods and refreshing milkshakes at the Bistro, or swing by their Prepared Foods Corner to take out homemade salads and fruit platters! You could even stroll around their inspiring Garden Centre filled with beautiful décor and perennials, as well as organic herbs and veggies.

Bringing together practitioners and professionals in sound art, the show features leading sound artists, scholars, and researchers in the field of sound studies, as well as visual artists who use sound as key components of their practice and musicians who experiment with sounds and music.

#149-Tuesday: Guided Nature Walks
Head on over to Bear Creek Park on October 14th for the final Guided Nature Walk of the year. The kids nature walk goes from 10-11 a.m. followed by the adult walk at 2 p.m. Look for the Eagle’s nest experience the wildlife and     trees and witness the annual salmon run.
